FAQs for Liposuction

  • What Is Liposuction?

The doctors will insert a thin, hollow tube called a cannula through small incisions in the area you want to target. Once the cannula is in place, fat will be loosened using a careful back-and-forth motion and then suctioned out through a surgical vacuum or a syringe attached to the cannula.

  • What Can Be Treated With Liposuction?

Liposuction is not an overall weight loss procedure and does not remove cellulite. It is a means of removing excess fat from targeted areas.

    • Thighs, hips, and buttocks
    • Abdomen and waist
    • Upper arms, back, and chest area
    • Cheeks, chin, and neck
    • Inner knees, calves, and ankles

The doctors may perform liposuction as a standalone procedure or recommend it as part of a larger process, such as a face-lift, breast reduction, or a tummy tuck.

  • Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

    • Men and women who are healthy and do not have a medical condition that can impair healing
    • Adults who are within 30% of their ideal weight
    • Individuals who have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone
    • People with realistic body-contouring goals
  • Is Liposuction Safe?

As with all surgeries, there are certain risks, which Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa will discuss with you in detail before you schedule the surgery. Both doctors are certified plastic surgeons and have extensive experience with liposuction.

    You may experience certain aftereffects.

    • Bruising
    • Changes in skin sensation
    • Temporary swelling and discomfort in the treatment area
  • What Is the Healing Process Like?

Recovery will vary according to the number of areas treated. It can take several weeks to months to fully recover.

You can expect to wear a compression garment or elastic bandage over treatment areas for several weeks after the procedure. These garments help control swelling and also compress the skin to fit your new body contours.

Small, temporary drains may be inserted beneath the skin to remove excess blood or other fluids.
