Rhinoplasty Q & A

Advanced Plastic and Hand Surgery

What is Rhinoplasty?

Often referred to as a “nose job,” rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes your nose. Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa can use this surgery to alter:

  • The overall size of your nose and its proportions in relation to your facial structure
  • The width of your nose at the bridge
  • The size and position of the nostrils
  • Your nose profile by removing visible humps or depressions at the bridge of your nose
  • A nasal tip that is enlarged, drooping, upturned, or hooked
  • Large, wide, or upturned nostrils

Dr. Johnson and Dr. Wimalawansa can also correct abnormalities in your anatomy that are causing nasal obstruction, such as a deviated nasal septum.

Who is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Like many other cosmetic procedures, rhinoplasty can greatly enhance your self-confidence. And Dr. Johnson's and Dr. Wimalawansa's surgical expertise and precision help ensure that you’ll be pleased with the results. However, it is a serious procedure that should be considered carefully, and both Dr. Johnson and Dr. Wimalawansa take the time to discuss the procedure and expected outcomes before scheduling your rhinoplasty.

Otherwise, to be considered for the surgery:

  • Your facial growth must be complete
  • You must be physically healthy
  • You should have realistic goals in mind regarding the postsurgical changes your appearance

What is the Procedure Like?

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, meaning you’ll be asleep for the surgery. Depending on the changes being made to your nose, Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa may make small incisions inside your nose or on the column between your nostrils. This allows him to gently lift the skin away so he can restructure your nose. Once he’s resized or reshaped your nose, he drapes the skin and other tissue back over your new nose and closes the surgical incisions with stitches.

How Long Before My Nose Heals?

Complete healing varies by individual and depends greatly on what surgical corrections you require. Your nose may be packed with supportive material and a splint after surgery to help protect the new structures.

You can expect the initial swelling to subside within a few weeks but it can take months to see the final results of your new nasal contour. Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa discuss all of these details before you proceed with rhinoplasty so that you can make an informed decision about your choices. They also see you back periodically during the postsurgical period to ensure that your nose is healing as expected.
