What is a Tummy Tuck?

Often called an abdominoplasty by physicians, a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa use to remove excess skin and restore weakened abdominal muscles to create a profile that is smoother and firmer than your presurgical tummy.

Even if your weight is where the chart says it should be, you may have a loose, protuberant, or sagging abdomen. Common reasons for this include:

  • Aging
  • Heredity
  • Pregnancy
  • Previous abdominal surgery
  • Significant weight loss or fluctuations in weight

You should not have a tummy tuck if you’re planning to get pregnant again in the future or think you might like to lose more weight.

What Happens During a Tummy Tuck?

You’ll sleep through your surgery under general anesthesia. Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa makes a horizontal incision part way between the top of your pubic hairline and your belly button. The exact shape and size of your incision depends on how much excess skin you have to lose. He does work to keep it in an area that allows you to wear that bikini you’ve got in your closet without showing off your scar.

Once the incision is made, Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa lifts the skin away and works on repairing and restoring the strength of your abdominal muscles. You may have enough excess skin in the upper abdominal region to require a second incision at the belly button level.

Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa then pulls what’s left of your upper abdominal skin down over your newly strengthened abs. He trims the excess skin away and sutures the skin together at the original incision site. He creates a new opening for your navel, pops the belly button through, and sutures it into position.

What’s a Body Lift?

A body lift is a surgical procedure that Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa uses, to essentially take a tummy tuck to the next level, by removing excess skin and reshaping and toning the underlying tissue that supports skin and fat.

You may consider a body lift for:

  • The abdominal area, often extending around the sides and into the lower back area
  • Lifting your buttocks
  • The inner, outer, or back of the thigh, or the entire thigh circumference

Using similar surgical techniques as those used in a tummy tuck, excess sagging skin and fat are removed as the underlying tissues are strengthened and toned. This procedure can also improve the appearance of dimpled, irregular skin.
