FAQs for Blepharoplasty

  • What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, muscle, and fat from the area around your eyes. It is necessitated by the aging process, which causes your eyelid muscles to stretch and weaken while fat accumulates above and below your eyelids.

  • What Can Eyelid Surgery Treat?

    • Sagging from your eyebrow area
    • Loose skin that creates folds in the natural contours of your upper eyelids
    • Fatty deposits that cause a puffy appearance to your eyelids
    • Persistent under-eye bags
    • Drooping lower eyelids and fine wrinkles of your lower eyelids
  • How Can Eyelid Surgery Improve Vision?

Severe sagging around your eyes can block your field of vision, significantly reducing your peripheral vision. Blepharoplasty removes the excess skin and opens up your vision field again.

  • What Happens Before Surgery?

The process begins with a detailed discussion with our doctors, who will go over your medical history, conditions, medications, and more. We also will discuss what changes you can expect in your appearance following blepharoplasty.

A preoperative exam typically includes a vision test, detailed measurements of your eyelids, and photography that will help the doctors plan your treatment.

  • How Long Does It Take to Heal From Eyelid Surgery?

Although most patients report minimal pain or discomfort following blepharoplasty, swelling and bruising may last as long as 10 to 14 days. Stitches will require postoperative care and recovery time will vary from patient to patient.

    • Avoid swimming for a week after surgery
    • Avoid strenuous activities such as aerobics and jogging for a week after surgery
    • Avoid heavy lifting for a week after surgery
    • Avoid using contact lenses for two weeks after surgery

Combining blepharoplasty with other cosmetic procedures could lead to additional restrictions so be sure to talk to your doctor.
