FAQs for Tummy Tucks & Body Lifts

  • What is a Tummy Tuck?

Sometimes referred to as an abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess skin and restores weakened abdominal muscles to create a smoother and firmer profile for your belly.

Although your weight chart may indicate you are where you should be, your abdomen may still look loose, protuberant, or saggy due to a range of issues.

    • Aging
    • Heredity
    • Pregnancy
    • Previous abdominal surgery
    • Significant weight loss or fluctuations in weight

You are not a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you're planning on another pregnancy or are looking to lose more weight.

  • What Happens During a Tummy Tuck?

While you sleep under general anesthesia, Dr. Johnson or Dr. Wimalawansa will make a horizontal incision between your pubic hairline and your navel. The exact shape and length of the incision will depend on how much skin you have to lose, but the doctor's goal will be to keep the incision hidden when you wear a bikini.

Once the incision is made, the doctor will lift the skin away and then repair and restore the strength of your abdominal muscles. He will then pull what remains of your skin down over your newly strengthened abs, trim the excess skin away, and suture the skin together.

In some cases, excess skin in the upper abdominal region will require a second incision at the navel. In any case, the doctor will create a new opening for your navel, pop the belly button through, and also suture that into position.

  • What is a Body Lift?

A body lift essentially takes the tummy tuck to the next level by removing additional excess skin and reshaping and toning the underlying tissue that supports your skin and fat in areas outside the belly.

    • Your abdominal area, often extending around the sides and into the lower back area
    • Your buttocks
    • Your inner, outer, or back of the thighs, or the entire thigh circumference

The process is similar to a tummy tuck and can be used to improve the look of dimpled, irregular skin.
