Cubital Tunnel

Relieve Pain caused by Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

Cubital tunnel syndrome (CTS), also known as ulnar nerve compression, is a condition that occurs when the ulnar nerve, which runs through the cubital tunnel (a small tunnel on the inner side of the elbow), becomes compressed or irritated. This can lead to symptoms such as tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hand and fingers, particularly the ring and small fingers.

Treatment for cubital tunnel syndrome varies based on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, conservative treatments may be recommended. These include:

  1. Bracing: Wearing an elbow splint or brace that keeps the elbow in a slightly bent position can help reduce pressure on the ulnar nerve, especially at night.
  2. Physical Therapy: Physical therapy exercises can be beneficial to improve strength and flexibility in the affected arm and reduce nerve compression.
  3. Activity Modification: Avoiding activities that aggravate the condition, such as prolonged bending of the elbow, can help alleviate symptoms.

For more severe or persistent cases of cubital tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel release surgery may be necessary. During this procedure, a surgeon will make an incision at the elbow and release or transpose (move) the ulnar nerve to relieve pressure. Surgery is typically considered when conservative treatments have not provided relief or if there is muscle weakness or wasting.

Fortunately, Dr. Sunishka Wimalawansa is a board-certified plastic surgeon with additional training and certification in surgery of the hand and upper extremities. Dr. Wimalawansa can effectively treat CTS with cubital tunnel release surgery. Call us today for an appointment.
