Targeted Muscle Reinnervation

Minimize Pain through Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR)

One of Dr. Wimalawansa's patients describes the severe phantom limb pain he lived with following the traumatic amputation of his leg, and how the operation known as "TMR" (targeted muscle reinnervation) helped alleviate his pain, got him off his chronic pain medicines, and reintegrated him back into his life.

TMR serves to quell the severe, chronic, and debilitating nerve-related pain signals that can occur after an amputation. TMR has been used to help treat established nerve-related phantom limb and neuroma pain following amputations.

However, more recently, TMR is also being performed at the same time as (or shortly after) the initial amputation procedure, thereby blocking the cascade that leads to subsequent severe nerve-related amputation stump and phantom limb pain. In this setting, "primary TMR" is essentially analogous to the concept of grounding a live wire to prevent an electrical fire.

If you are suffering from post-amputation phantom limb pain and/or residual limb amputation stump pain and desire to learn more about whether you are a candidate and how TMR might be able to help you, please contact our office to request a consultation.
